Joanne Pham, MD

My journey with medicine started over 20 years ago as a board-certified otolaryngologist in Wise County. Over my time caring for patients, I found the best results when promoting natural healing. This involves addressing nutrition, lifestyle, sleep, spirituality, physical fitness, and stress management. This led me to a fellowship in integrative medicine followed by board certification and eventually training in medical acupuncture.

Integrative medicine combines the best of conventional and alternative/complementary medicine for holistic care. Acupuncture an alternative system of medical treatment with over 2500 years of practice. Medical acupuncture is carried out by trained physicians, combining our scientific understanding of neuromuscular anatomy and pain physiology with traditionally rooted acupuncture techniques to treat patients. Acupuncture serves to harmonize the flow of bioelectric current, also known as ā€œQiā€ or vital energy. This involves the therapeutic insertion of very small solid needles in specific points located in pathways or meridians throughout the body for treatment.

Medical acupuncture is best known for treating musculoskeletal problems but can be used either as the primary or a complementary treatment in other medical disorders.

I have used acupuncture to treat musculoskeletal pain, dizziness, tinnitus, insomnia, loss of smell, voice tremor, muscle weakness, TMJ, constipation, and many others. In some cases, patients responded to acupuncture when conventional treatment had not been effective. I find it most amazing that I can use acupuncture to calm the nervous system.

I practice several styles of acupuncture with emphasis in treating the body constitutionally (mind, body, and spirit) and not just the symptoms.

Acupuncture treatment is not done in isolation. Healthy adjustment to nutrition, mobility, sleep habit, mindset, and stress management are part of the process. In nutrition, I focus on using food as medicine first. I believe in judicious use of supplements and herbal medicine when needed.

The goal of my practice is to provide an integrative approach, combining conventional and alternative treatment to achieve health and restorative healing with the least possible side effects from treatment.
