What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture uses very small solid needle(s) in specific locations (acupuncture points) to therapeutically treat a medical issue. The depth of the treatment is generally superfical, at the fascial layer. The treatment can be for a local body treatment or can affect a different part of the body. Common locations of treatment: hand, feet, back, ear, and scalp. The number of needles vary but can be as few as 4-20 per phase of treatment. The needles are left in place for about 15-20 minutes as the body rests. Other modality beside needles may involve infrared light, acupressure or massage, essential oil and electrotherapy.

Is acupuncture painful?

Generally, acupuncture is not painful since the needles are very small. Some parts of the body are more sensitive than others but none of them are considered significantly painful. After needle placement, some patients may feel the “de Qi” sensation of mild tingling, heat or achiness. Others may not feel any sensation at all.

What medical problem can acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture is well known for its success to treat musculoskeletal pain like tendonitis, neck and back pain, and sciatica. It can also be used to address other health issue promoting faster healing and promote general health. Medical issues such insomia, gastrointestinal problem, allergic rhinitis, headache, tinnitus, anxiety, depression, decreased smell from viral infection like COVID, dizziness, TMJ, glucose sensitivity, menopausal symptoms can be addressed. Acupuncture treatment can augment mediccal treatment for inflammation, infertility, sleep disorder, and strokes. There are auricular protocols for treatment of addiction and weight reduction. Regular treatment of acupuncture is great for general vitality.

How do I prepare for an acupuncture treatment session?

Medical history and intake form will need to be completed before treatment. Be well hydrated several days before coming for treatment. Wear loose comfortable clothing like T-shirt and shorts. If weather not permitting, you can change before the visit. Socks and hand jewelry will need to be removed during treatment for body acupuncture. Earrings will need to be removed for ear acupuncture.
